Human Rights Day

December 10 is celebrated worldwide on Human Rights Day.
Since 1994 the Universidad Nacional de San Luis in honor of its first rector disappeared by the last military dictatorship, delivers the Rector Mauricio Amilcar Lopez Award to individuals or groups for outstanding work in defending and promoting human rights.

Mauricio Amilcar Lopez


Born in Mendoza in 1919. He was an active leader of the Student Christian Movement, a believer of deep spirituality, intellectual and activist first quality. It was the first rector of the Universidad Nacional de San Luis. Always supported the role of students in the university leadership. Three years after his appointment as rector, was expelled from college for the military.

One morning in 1977, nine armed men with their faces covered with socks into her house (in Mendoza) and kidnapped him. Were unsuccessful requests for habeas corpus claims before the de facto authorities who ruled the country, the demands of the international community, both ecclesiastical and secular. His fate, like that of thousands, vanished in the shadows of the military government's actions at that time. According to the National Commission on Disappeared Persons, nearly 10,000 of the 30,000 who disappeared during the de facto government were university students.
